Fine Arts
About our Art Program from Mrs. Woerner
Our art program at Taylor Elementary is rooted in the belief that every child has something meaningful to say and that art is one of the most powerful ways to say it.
I came to education with a background in Fine Arts and with a deep belief that art is not about perfection or performance, but about expression, exploration, and understanding ourselves and the world around us. In our classroom, we focus on the process as much as the product. Students are encouraged to take risks, embrace mistakes, and see those “oops” moments as opportunities for growth and discovery. Art becomes a space where they can build confidence, develop their voice, and learn that their ideas matter.
My philosophy centers on helping students create for themselves, not for approval. We talk often about what art means, not just what it looks like and the impact it can have. Through this, students begin to understand that art is not just something you do; it’s a way of thinking, reflecting, and connecting. It becomes a tool for social-emotional growth, for empathy, problem solving, idea production and for telling their own stories.
Throughout the year, students engage in a wide range of experiences across different media and techniques. They explore drawing, painting, sculpture, fiber arts, and even glass work. Many projects are connected to larger ideas like identity, perspective, community, and voice. Even our youngest artists are encouraged to reflect, make choices, and communicate meaning through their work.
At Taylor, the art room is more than a place to make things; it is a place where students learn to see. They learn to see themselves, each other, and the world with curiosity and courage. It is truly an honor to help them discover just how powerful their voice can be.
